Children and picky adults won’t refuse their medicine when it’s a sweet treat!
Syrups and elixirs have lasted centuries as a popular means of taking herbal remedies. I speculate that this is due in part to their sweet and often delicious taste!
Basically a concentrated herbal infusion in water, syrups are then thickened with honey, sugar, or another sweetener that acts as a stabilizer and masks the taste of strong, bitter herbs. Traditionally, alcohol was added as a preservative (and as a sedative in some cold formulas), which was important when refrigeration wasn’t common. I choose to omit the alcohol in my formulations so they are appropriate for children as well as adults, however this does require them to be refrigerated.
All Chickadee Apothecary syrups are made with quality raw honey as it contains more beneficial properties.
